Emergency Contraception

Ella (ulipristal acetate) is a prescription emergency contraceptive that can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex. It is considered more effective than over-the-counter options.

FAQs

How does Ella work?
Ella contains ulipristal acetate, a progesterone receptor modulator. It works primarily by suppressing or delaying ovulation. By preventing the ovary from releasing an egg, sperm left in the reproductive tract cannot fertilize it.

How is Ella different from over-the-counter options like Plan B?
Plan B (levonorgestrel) is available over-the-counter, works best within 72 hours, and loses significant efficacy for individuals weighing over 165 lbs. Ella is prescription-only, remains equally effective across the full 5-day (120-hour) window, and works at higher body weights (up to 195 lbs).

How fast can I get Ella through telehealth?
Because emergency contraception is time-sensitive, we make every effort to prioritize your care and get you treated as soon as possible. Once approved, your prescription can be sent electronically to your local pharmacy for same-day pickup.

Are there side effects?
Most people tolerate Ella well. Common, mild side effects may include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, menstrual cramps, fatigue, or dizziness. Your next period may also start a few days earlier or later than expected. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking Ella, please let us know immediately.

Can I take Ella while using hormonal birth control?
Ella interacts with birth control pills, patches, or rings, potentially making both less effective if taken simultaneously. If you use Ella, wait 5 days before resuming or starting hormonal birth control, and use a reliable barrier method (like condoms) until your next menstrual period.

How effective is Ella?
Ella is the most effective emergency contraceptive available, however it is not 100% effective. Studies show a pregnancy rate of less than 1% if Ella is taken within 24 hours, and approximately 1.3% when taken within 2-5 days of unprotected sex.
