FAQs
What is DoxyPEP?
DoxyPEP involves taking a single, targeted dose of Doxycycline within 72 hours after a sexual encounter. Studies show it can significantly reduce the likelihood of acquiring 3 common infections: Syphilis, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhea.
How does DoxyPEP work, and when should I take it?
DoxyPEP works by eliminating bacterial pathogens before they can establish a full infection in your body. The standard dose is 200mg of Doxycycline to be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours after condomless oral, anal, or vaginal sex.
Does DoxyPEP protect against HIV or other STIs?
No, DoxyPEP only targets bacterial STIs (syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea). It does not protect against viral infections such as HIV, Herpes, or HPV.
Who is eligible for DoxyPEP?
The CDC recommend DoxyPEP for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) or transgender women, who have multiple sexual partners or who have have had at least one diagnosed bacterial STI in the past 12 months.
Are there side effects? How do I take it?
Doxycycline is generally very well tolerated. Minor side effects can include mild nausea or stomach upset. To minimize stomach irritation, take your dose with a full 8-ounce glass of water and a light meal. Avoid lying down for at least 1 hour after taking it, and refrain from taking dairy products, antacids, or mineral supplements (calcium, iron, magnesium) within 2 hours of your dose, as they can block absorption. Doxycycline can also cause mild sun sensitivity, so sunscreen is recommended during daytime outdoor activities.
Do I still need regular STI testing?
Yes, DoxyPEP is a powerful preventitive tool, but it is not 100% effective. Regular STI screening every 3 to 6 months is recommended.
